Bunsen
Ideal for recreating a small sterile area
The Bunsen is a laboratory gas burner, whose function is to produce a small flame from the combustion of methane gas.
In the microbiological field, it is an instrument that we cannot do without, in addition to allowing us to heat water and mixtures, it serves above all to sterilise the equipment (loops, flasks, test tubes and containers, etc.) and the air in the work area according to the principle of convective motion.
In fact, we will need it to create a ‘sterile’ zone in which we can carry out all our analyses.
Operation
The gas enters at the base of the torch and continues upwards. It is mixed or not with the macaw by turning the ring nut so that the two holes in the torch remain open or closed.
Due to the high temperature generated by the flame, which must be rigorously regulated by means of a special air inlet so that it is oxidising (blue) and therefore in its hottest stage (approximately 1500°C), the air, heated by the bunsen burner, acquires a circular motion with a chimney effect.
The sterile air motion will swirl around the bunsen, creating a small sterile area with a radius of 30-50cm.
Risks
The risks associated with using the bunsen burner are many and include: burns, fires, formation of areosols, and possible gas leaks.
Caution must therefore be exercised, and flaming of non-heat-resistant materials must be avoided.
Precautions
- Clean the area around the bunsen well, taking care to remove flammable materials such as pencils, paper, rulers, plastic, etc.
- Keep hair tied up and away from the flame
- Equip yourself with anti-burn cream
- Take great care when using the bunsen burner in the various operations
- Always shut off the gas supply upstream of the bunsen once it has been used
